Hans van Hoek’s paintings were called ‘Mystical still lifes’. Spirituality, nature and life are his great sources of inspiration. These essential themes find their form in the landscapes, still lifes and religious motifs that he often paints in (very) large format, usually surrounded by a monumental wooden frame, lovingly carved, varnished or polished with the loving devotion of the craftsman. Van Hoek paints layer upon layer, his images imbued with symbolism with deep, luminous colours. The work of El Greco and Cézanne helped shape his style. Van Hoek had many solo exhibitions, both nationally and internationally, and participated in high-profile exhibitions such as the Documenta and the Venice Biennale, as well as ‘La Grande Parade’ and ‘De Voorstelling’ (the latter curated by Queen Beatrix) at the Stedelijk. Museum in Amsterdam. His works are included in the collections of various museums and companies.
